An idea as brilliant as it is simple: Godblock. A filter to block the violent and “psychologically damaging” content on religious websites.

Last week I have completed a small project for SpangaS, a Dutch television series for teenagers. They are starting their new season on September 13th and wanted a count down on the website. I went the extra mile and made this in Javascript instead of just Rails.
Developing with subdomains
Every now and then I am working on a project that uses subdomains extensively. Up until now I had to use my local hosts file and a bunch of hosts I had to maintain by hand. Tiresome. Now thankfully there’s smackaho.st and the more concisely named lvh.me. These DNS entries point to 127.0.0.1 and have wildcard support too. Neat.
CouchDB as document store
I am at RailsWayCon 2010 and just enjoyed a pleasant presentation by Jonathan Weiss. He told us about CouchDB as a document store and why it rocks.
Advertisement opt-out
I just discovered this page, which presumably opts me out from receiving targeted ads. Yey! No idea if this actually works, but seems like a good idea.
HTML5 on a major national website
Yesterday I promised to blog about my work with HTML5 and a major .nl website. The website in question is radio1.nl and early this morning I relaunched the site. Response has been very positive so far.
Unobtrusive mp3 player
Last year, unobtrusive javascript really hit the scene and my sites no exception. I’ve been perfecting the technique to show an mp3 audio player, which I have debuted at radio6.nl this week. It’s a tiny bit of Javascript with a big help from jQuery.

Cross-browser testing
It’s one of the most tedious aspects of my job: cross-browser testing. Meaning: see if the stuff I have developed looks the same in all browsers (Firefox, Opera, Safari and -ick- IE too). Luckily this can be automated, saving me lots of headaches and lots of different computers. Ta-daa! Litmusapp.
Now online: Z@PPmixer
For once a web app not done by me, although I did the single-sign-on in the back end. The Z@PPmixer is all new and improved. It’s a tool (FOR KIDS) to create online mashups of video, images and sound and share them with others. Top voted mixes are broadcast on national TV.
