In six weeks time, Holland will join the other developed countries of this world and the smoking ban in bars and restaurants will go in effect. And recently I have found myself more and more annoyed by people smoking. The funny thing is, I never used to be anti-smoking like this. In fact I considered it quite normal (though having never smoked myself) for people to smoke.
But now that more and more people have quit, and smokers have become somewhat of a rarity, I find myself increasingly annoyed when people light up. In fact I find myself becoming quite agitated. I really dislike smelling like smoke afterwards; the unhealthy aspect even comes sort of second place.
I guess it will all improve when the ban goes in effect, as that will mark the day when I no longer have to be in contact with smokers ever again. Consider that for a second. Ten years ago, smoke was everywhere and you dealt with it. Now, smokers are pariahs. Weird how that goes. Heathly, but weird.
Well the smoke and smokers are the same. What accounts for your change in attitude? Harassing smokers is politically correct by government order that’s what. The government is in control of your nose.
Sure you can blame the guv’ment, I often do but in reality the government is us. At least in Holland (which may be naieve of me). I really believe the majority of people are happy with the ban. Ergo, in this particular instance, democracy works. Plus, you really can’t beat the trend. The number of smokers has diminished for decades…
